We were appointed by our Client to provide designs for a new dwelling, to the rear of their existing home within a Green Belt setting. The dwelling will replace an existing outbuilding, previously home to chickens and agricultural machinery.
The proposed design is context driven, inspired by the rural landscape and agricultural buildings of the local countryside setting. The driving force behind the design for the house is to create a contemporary interpretation of local farm buildings. Rather than a single linear building, directly relating to the existing structure, we propose a cluster of clearly defined buildings. The four single-storey buildings provide forms that are recognisable within a the rural context, and are clustered together as in a farmyard setting. Separate defined volumes, varying in scale, form, and materials, evoke a collection of farm buildings that has evolved over time...a piggery, a shippon, tractor shed, stables - that have a strong rural connection.
